5 Questions to ask BEFORE
Booking Your Newborn Photographer
So, you peed on a stick, saw that exciting second line and one of the first things you did was jump on your phone and look up newborn photographers? Or maybe you’ve been following your favourites for a while in anticipation? Hey, I get it! This is why I do what I do! I truly believe that this is one of the most exciting times in your life, and being trusted to capture these moments is a dream come true. But apart from the obvious questions like style and price point, what questions should you be asking a photographer before trusting them with your precious bundle? I’ve outlined 5 important questions below to get you started!
Are you trained in newborn safety?
It is so important that the person photographing your baby knows what they are doing. Some of the photos you see aren’t what the seem. They can be composites (multiples images put together in Photoshop), or supporting hands may have been edited out to get the shot without compromising the baby’s safety. Your photographer should have received training by other experienced newborn photographers, or completed online courses. Knowing how to pose safely and how to prepare the studio (temperature, sanitation etc) are just a couple of the important details that a newborn photographer must always be aware of.
Are you insured?
You should only trust your baby with a professional, and if a photographer is not insured and registered as a business, then they are not a professional. Insurance doesn’t just protect the photographer, it protects you as well.
How long have you been working with newborns?
Even when training is completed, in order to get a great gallery of images, you have to have a knack with babies! This comes with time and patience. After 6 years of working with newborns, I have my tricks to settle and soothe a newborn babe. You want to be 100% confident when handing your baby over to your photographer. I’ve even had parents so comfortable they’ve fallen asleep on the couch during their session!
Are your vaccinations up to date?
This one is self explanatory! Your photographer should be up to date with all their vaccinations.
Do you accept special requests?
If you have a special photo in mind then you should definitely check with the photographer prior to booking! Some photographers don’t cater to special requests or set ups and you don’t want to find that out after the deposit is paid! I absolutely adore working with my clients to tailor their session and have put together many special sets over the years. They are nearly always my favourites!
I hope this helps you on your journey to find your newborn photographer! If you have any further questions about a session, please feel free to contact me via my website www.christieleejohnston.com.au
